  1. I have had exactly the same experience that you have with NewtNews.

  3. The Chameleon software does do one thing reasonably well that I haven't
  4. found a public-domain or shareware approach to (yet): PPP support with a
  5. WINSOCK.DLL interface.
  6.  
  7. The actual connection does take more time (about 30 secs) than does
  8. connecting with my Mac with MacPPP to the same dial-up service.
  9.  
  10. Once the connection is established, I haven't yet found a piece of the
  11. admittedly complete Chameleon software collection that I liked as much
  12. as an alternative public-domain or shareware choice.

  14. By far the worst is NewtNews -- It took forever for me too. I have
  15. switched to WinVN, and like it a lot. I find it faster and more convenient
  16. than the Trumpet newsreader

  18. For mail -- I never get general protection faults, but then, I use Eudora.

  20. For FTP -- I use WS_FTP

  22. For Gopher -- I use HGopher
