- I have had exactly the same experience that you have with NewtNews.
-
- The Chameleon software does do one thing reasonably well that I haven't
- found a public-domain or shareware approach to (yet): PPP support with a
- WINSOCK.DLL interface.
-
- The actual connection does take more time (about 30 secs) than does
- connecting with my Mac with MacPPP to the same dial-up service.
-
- Once the connection is established, I haven't yet found a piece of the
- admittedly complete Chameleon software collection that I liked as much
- as an alternative public-domain or shareware choice.
-
- By far the worst is NewtNews -- It took forever for me too. I have
- switched to WinVN, and like it a lot. I find it faster and more convenient
- than the Trumpet newsreader
-
- For mail -- I never get general protection faults, but then, I use Eudora.
-
- For FTP -- I use WS_FTP
-
- For Gopher -- I use HGopher
